Into the 20th Century

In 1900 James & Catherine had another wee boy whom they called William. Sadly William too died aged 18 months old on the 28th of March 1902 of Bronchio-pneumonia, later that very same year, their third son James who was aged 12, died on October 14th of TB & cardiac disease.
When these deaths occured the family were living at 60 Spittal Rows, Newton in Cambuslang.

At this point its likely that James was working at the Spittal Colliery, which is situated halway between Blantyre & Cambuslang

So in the short space of three years they had lost four children, and James’ brother William died in the same pit his father had died in 18 years earlier. William fell down the pit shaft at No 11 Drumpelier Pit, he was aged 35, and left a young family.

What I know of James and Catherine’s family before 1900, I’ve covered on the previous pages.
In 1904 they had another wee boy, this one they named after James who had died two years earlier.
This second James was my grandfather, he was born on the second of January 1904.
I believe James was their last child, but need to complete more research in order to be certain of this.
Around about the time of James' birth, I believe James and Catherine moved with their family to Blantyre, no doubt to work one of Blantyre's pits.

At this point this was their family tree.

Over the period 1899 until 1915 there were several deaths I’ve discovered.

These being:

Sarah Elizabeth Rouse in Shettleston aged 0 (possibly still born) I don’t know whose child she was or if she was even related.
William Rouse in Coatbridge in 1907 aged 1 year old, he must have been John and Margaret’s son
Edward Rouse died in Blantyre in 1908
Michael Rouse died in Blantyre in 1912
and in 1913 Catherine Rouse died in Hamilton.
These last three, I haven’t positively identified, and they all died 0 years, which meant that they might well have died in childbirth..
It’s possible that they might have even belonged to the next generation of Rouses’.

Also in Blantyre around the turn of the century was another Rouse family who “blew in” sometime in the late 1890’s. The head of this family was recorded as being a travelling showman, I think its likely they left early in the century.

In 1913, the Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Margaret Ann Rouse nee McGavigan died on the 15th of November at 16 New Lands Blantyre where she was living with my great grandparents James and Catherine. The cause of death on Margaret's death certificate was shown to be "Senile Marasmus", she was 75 years old.

This is all the information I have as of 8th September 2000.
My uncle Michael who died in 1998 started off this Family History and I’m very keen to complete as much as I can, not just for myself or my relatives but our children and children’s children.
So if you can help please do, I’d like to update and make complete all the Rouse family events of the 20th century. When I’m complete (or as much as I can be) I’ll ensure that everyone who wants one will get a copy of the Family History and any photos we might uncover.

I also have researched to a lesser degree the Fotheringham line, so if any of you would like the information on that then let me know.
