Lanarkshire.. Shortly after the birth of Jane, the family moved once again, this time they moved to Coatbridge in the Old Monklands district, (see map below) where the area was undergoing a massive expansion and boom due to the demand for Coal and Iron for the Industrial Revolution.
Tragedy struck the family when the oldest son John died aged 11 in December 1869 from what was recorded on his death certificate as “extravasation” which I believe was probably internal haemorrhaging. At this time the family were living at 57 Brown’s Square Langloan, being one of the small villages that later became part of Coatbridge.
In 1870 the couple had their last child who was named after John who had died the year previous. John (2nd) was born at No.2 Ironworks Row Langloan, on the 21st of August. ![]() At this point in time the family comprised of seven living children from 9 recorded births. The ages of the children in 1870 were: Susan 15, Patrick 10, James 8, Margaret Ann 6, William 4, Jane 2, and baby John. In 1872 their oldest child Susan married John Johnstone in Shettleston on the 4th of November. John Johnstone was a coalminer and he was also Irish. Susan was 17 when she married John. Susan & John had several children. For the next few years there were no recorded births deaths or marriages for the Rouse family, but in 1879 they lost another child when their daughter Jane aged 10 died on the 23rd of January after suffering from Bronchitis for 8 days. John was still shown to be a Furnacekeeper at this point in time and still living at No.2 Ironworks Row Langloan. |
